Case study 02 · Vopsim Orice · Business Development / Vertical Integration / B2B

We needed a paint shop.We ended up building another business.

01 / The problem

The problem.

At Furniture Factory, we manufacture bespoke furniture.

That means different shapes, dimensions, materials and finishes for almost every project.

To execute increasingly complex designs, we needed custom MDF and metal components, finished to a high standard and delivered within reasonable lead times.

But there was a problem.

Large manufacturers weren’t interested in the kind of custom work we needed.

Smaller workshops couldn’t consistently meet our quality expectations.

So I decided to develop the capability in-house.

02 / 2023

The investment.

In 2023, we began developing our own painting operation.

We expanded our production space by an additional 700 square metres, growing from 300 to a total of 1,000 square metres. We also invested in two painting booths: one with a water curtain and another automotive-style booth.

The goal was to improve our ability to manufacture the custom components required by Furniture Factory.

It gave us greater control over the finishing process and the flexibility needed for bespoke projects.

300 → 1,000

Square metres of production space: an additional 700 m² that made room for the paint shop.

03 / The surprise

The unexpected opportunity.

But then something interesting happened.

The production capacity we had created was significantly greater than Furniture Factory actually needed.

We had invested in the infrastructure, equipment and capabilities.

And we had available capacity.

So I asked myself a simple question.

If we needed these services, wouldn’t other furniture manufacturers need them too?

Instead of leaving the additional capacity unused, I decided to offer painting services to other furniture producers.

And that’s how Vopsim Orice developed into a B2B business.

What began as a solution to an internal manufacturing challenge became a commercial service for an entirely different customer segment.

04 / What it shows

From an operational problem to a business opportunity.

Vopsim Orice is an example of how solving a problem inside an existing company can reveal a new market opportunity.

We identified a limitation in our supply chain.

We developed the capabilities we needed.

We invested in additional production capacity.

And then we commercialised that capacity by offering services to other manufacturers.

Sometimes, solving your own problem reveals an opportunity to solve someone else’s.
